The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is an innovative climate change and energy saving scheme for the UK. It will encourage improvements in energy efficiency which can save organisations money. The scheme has been designed to generate a shift in awareness in large organisations, and to drive changes in behaviour and infrastructure.
The scheme is a central part of the UK’s strategy for controlling our carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and will tackle CO2 emissions not already covered by Climate Change Agreements and the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.
This will help reduce the country’s carbon footprint to deliver the ambitious emissions reduction
targets set in the Government’s Climate Change Act. The scheme will start in April 2010 and around 20,000 organisations may be affected by the scheme.
If an organisation fails to comply with their obligations, it may result in penalties including monetary fines.
How will it benefit you? It is estimated that the benefit/savings to participating organisations will be around £1billion by 2020.
What type of organisations will be involved? The Carbon Reduction Commitment will encompass large public and private sector organisations across the UK including supermarkets, water companies, banks, local authorities, state-funded schools and all central government departments. Organisations will qualify as a CRC participant based on their half hourly electricity usage.
